Hi. I’m Maria Lovell, I am a qualified Animal Behaviour Technician and Dog Trainer, with PACT (Professional Association of Canine Trainers) and the ABTC (Animal Behaviour and Training Coucil). I am also a Bronze and Silver UK Sniffer Dogs Scent Instructor.
The ABTC promotes the welfare of animals undergoing training and behaviour therapy, thus protecting the psychological welfare of animal. This means I have been taught, assessed and accredited for my ability to fully demonstrate the skills needed for these roles, as set out by the ABTC.
In a nutshell, I work by helping your dog make right choices by using fun, reward based, science led methods, supporting PACT's and ABTC’s ethics and ethos.
The ABTC register is the only list of Dog Trainers recommended by the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Blue Cross.
I am based in Leamington Spa, and cover all surrounding areas.
I started studying Canine Training and Behaviour in 2016 after my 5-year-old girl, Lilly, became reactive to other dogs. I’d had a reactive dog in the past, a rescue called Phoebe, and had enlisted the help of a local trainer. However, Phoebe’s reactivity became worse and escalated to a point where I could no longer walk her.
I was determined that this would not happen with Lilly, so decided to take a behaviour course with the British College of Canine Studies. I wanted to understand what was happening and learn how to help her. It wasn’t until I started studying, that I developed a better understanding of why Phoebe got worse rather than better.
It was at this point that I discovered that the industry is unregulated. This essentially means anyone can claim to be a Dog Trainer or Behaviour consultant, with zero knowledge of how dogs learn, or how they communicate. This gave me the desire to search for an organisation that was striving towards regulation in the industry, as I didn’t want others to go through the same as I did with Phoebe.
In 2019 I joined PACT (Professional Association of Canine Trainers), to become an accredited Dog Trainer. PACT is accredited by the ABTC (Animal Behaviour & Training Council).
In January 2023, I took a course to become a Bronze UK Sniffer Dogs Scent Instructor Trainer, and a Silver Instructor Trainer the same year.
In 2025 after a 1 year course, 8 Assignments, 4 exams and a Practical Assessment by the ABTC, I qualified as a Behaviour Technician – helping rehabilitate dogs with problem behaviours.
I continuously improving my knowledge via seminar, webinars and courses, ensuring I am always up to date on CPD
